Xanax is the brand name for alprazolam, a prescription benzodiazepine.
Medical benefits include:
- Short-term relief of severe anxiety, including excessive worry, tension, restlessness, trembling, and physical anxiety symptoms.
- Treatment of panic disorder, helping reduce sudden panic attacks and fear of future attacks.
- Relatively fast calming effects during acute anxiety or panic symptoms. The FDA-approved uses are acute treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and treatment of panic disorder in adults.
Xanax can cause drowsiness, impaired coordination, memory problems, tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal. It should not be stopped suddenly after regular use because withdrawal may be severe and can include seizures.
Never combine Xanax with oxycodone, hydromorphone, morphine, Percocet, alcohol, GHB, sleeping pills, or other sedatives unless specifically managed by a clinician. These combinations can cause extreme sedation, slowed breathing, coma, or death.
